Mechanical Watch Care: Tips from the Builder

Care Instructions

1 / Daily Winding & Setting

  • Automatic watches: wear for at least 8 hours a day to keep them fully charged and lubricants distributed.
  • If unworn for a few days and stopped: give the crown 20-30 slow clockwise turns (winding position) before wearing again.
  • Always take the watch off your wrist when winding to avoid stressing the crown stem.

The Date Danger Zone

  • Avoid setting the date between 9 PM and 3 AM — the date-change mechanism is engaged and forcing it can damage the date-wheel teeth.
  • Safe method: move the hands forward past 3 AM (or to 6:30) before adjusting the date.

2 / Environmental & Impact Protection

  • Avoid hard shocks — remove the watch for golf, tennis, or manual labour with repeated vibration.
  • Beware magnets — speakers, induction chargers, and fridges can magnetize the hairspring and cause the watch to run fast.
  • Avoid extreme heat/cold (saunas, hot tubs) — temperature swings can damage internal lubricants.

3 / Cleaning and Water Awareness

  • Wipe the case, crystal, and bracelet regularly with a soft microfiber cloth.
  • For watches rated 10 ATM/100M+: lukewarm water and mild non-detergent soap with a soft toothbrush is fine — ensure the crown is secured first.
  • Rinse with fresh water after salt water or chlorine exposure.
  • Water resistance ratings: 3ATM/30M splash-proof only; 5ATM/50M light rain/hand-washing; 10ATM/100M+ swimming and shallow snorkeling.
  • Keep leather straps dry — avoid soaking, sweat, and perfumes/lotions.

4 / Long-Term Maintenance

  • A full service (disassembly, cleaning, lubrication, reassembly, regulation) is recommended every 3-5 years.
  • Have water-resistance gaskets checked/replaced every 1-2 years if the watch regularly meets water.
